Following the resounding success of the R107, the R129 Mercedes-Benz SL had a rather tough act to follow, as it still had to carry on the tradition of a fast and reliable grand touring convertible. The advantage designers had with the R129 was technology. By the time the final car rolled off the production line in 1989, these earlier models had been in production for 18 years with very little change. Therefore, the SL500 featured many new and innovative ideas, such as controlled electronic damping, automatically expanding roll-over bar and a more modern multi-link rear axle. In addition to this was a fully operating electric roof, windows, door mirrors and seats, which made this model easy and comfortable to operate. The new SL also boasted a more powerful engine, and the stopping power was aided by anti-locking braking for added reassurance.
The vendor purchased this car in 2016 from County Classic Cars Ltd in Midhurst, with an odometer reading of 91,034 miles and states he has covered under 5,000 miles in his ownership. The vendor states the vehicle is in working order but may require some recommissioning and recommends servicing as it has not been used for two years due to the vendor suffering with health issues. The vendor informs Historics the car is provided with bills and receipts with recent works totalling over £5,000 with works carried out by ‘Classic Car Mechanic’ based in Liphook, for the car to pass its last MoT on the 15th of August 2022. The car hood was repaired and in large part replaced in 2021. The car also comes with hardtop which needs re spraying and lining re-glued as well as the hardtop stand included in the sale. The body work benefits from a recent repair to the wing due to a poor original paintjob. The leather interior is in fair condition although the drivers seat needs some care and attention. The vendor has recently polished the car and informs us that the rear bumper has some stress cracks. This vehicle is supplied with current V5, HPi certificate and various invoices.
