The Mercedes-Benz SL class has been manufactured since 1954. The designation SL derives from the German 'Sport Leicht' or 'Sport Light' and was first applied to the 300SL 'Gullwing,' named after the upward-opening doors. The term SL-Class refers to the marketing variations of the vehicle, including the numerous engine configurations spanning five design generations. The Mercedes-Benz R107 and C107 cars were produced from 1971 through to 1989, being the second longest single series ever produced by Mercedes-Benz after the G-Class. The R107 took the chassis components of the mid-size W114 model and mated them to the larger engines from the S-Class (W116) and has become a benchmark of quality throughout the years.
This wonderful example showing 96,790 on the odometer is presented in its original colour of Diamontblau Metallic over a contrasting beige leather interior. It has been treated to much restoration work in recent years including an extensive respray returning the car to its original colour, a full leather interior renovation using the original hide, reconditioned OEM wheels, as well as various other works. Showing very little sign of age, the paintwork, interior, and hood are all presented in excellent condition as is the engine bay which is very clean. Accompanying the 500SL is a sizeable history file detailing the restoration, many old MoT test certificates, photographic records of the restoration, many sundry invoices, and the V5C Registration document. Dry stored and exercised occasionally the vendor reports that the 500SL runs very well indeed and is a joy to drive. This is a wonderful example with an extensive history. Offered in one of the most desirable colour combinations we are sure it will be huge amounts of fun for the new owner. Consigned by Dominic Lake.
